They are more than just places to stop and fill up your gas tank or grab a pack of smokes. And because vehicle-ridden travelers are seeking better choices than just a Slurpee or a packaged sandwich, convenience stores are riding a wave of change.

Convenience stores are a $495.3 billion a year industry, consisting of 140,655 locations, and many are moving upscale in an effort to compete with grocery stores and even Wal-Marts, which are adding fuel pumps to their list of services.

Jeff Lenard, spokesman for the National Association of Convenience Stores, calls it a "20-year overnight success."
