The otherwise excellent article "In Rome: The `Forgotten Front'
" {Outlook, May 29} did not recognize the major contribution the
Polish army made to the liberation of Italy. Polish cemeteries in
Loretto, Casamassima, Bologna and, the largest, in Monte Cassino,
testify to the price paid by Polish soldiers.
The most significant contribution the Polish army made to the
Allied victory in World War II was its capture of the key German
stronghold of Monte Cassino. This opened the way for the Allies to
move on Rome from the Salerno invasion beachhead, captured in
September 1943 - a full nine months before the Normandy invasion.
