When William Ewing steps away from his job as executive director of the Maryland Food Bank next February, he'll be leaving behind a $25 million-a-year operation that feeds nearly 50,000 people each week.

For Ewing, leaving the 87,000-square-foot warehouse in Baltimore is a bittersweet experience.

When the food bank first opened in 1979, it was the first of its kind on the East Coast and the third in the country.

"I could never have imagined when I volunteered to help a few people get a food bank started in a small building, that what we have today would be possible and, frankly, needed," he said.
