Martek reports lower profit

Martek Biosciences Corp., of Columbia, which develops, manufactures and sells products from microalgae, reported revenue for its fiscal second quarter ended April 30 of $76.7 million, up 9 percent from $70.2 million reported in the prior-year period. Net income was $4.9 million, or 15 cents per diluted share, an 11.8 percent drop compared with $5.5 million, or 17 cents per diluted share, earned in the previous year's quarter. Martek said its earnings were negatively affected by lower-than-expected contract manufacturing margins and cost increases for ARA, a nutritional oil used in infant formula.
