The Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in a major same-sex
child-custody case Wednesday, with several judges expressing
reservations about embracing the concept of de facto parenthood.
The case, Janice M. v. Margaret K., presents the issue of whether
a legal parent's romantic partner, who has not formally adopted the
child but arguably played a parental role, has standing to seek
visitation or custody.
Lawyers for Margaret are asking the top court to hold that she was
the de facto parent of Maya, whom her ex-partner Janice adopted.
