Port sets cargo record

The Maryland Port Administration said recently compiled maritime cargo statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau show a record- setting 9.3 million tons of general cargo moved through the Port of Baltimore's public and private terminals in 2006, the first time that has happened in the port's 301-year history. The 2006 total is up from 8.8 million tons in 2005. The total value of cargo moving through the port's public and private terminals in 2006 was $36.7 billion, up from $35.9 billion in 2005, which itself set a new record at the time, MPA officials said.
