Article: French Troops Race To Rescue of Tutsis; 1st Effort to Protect Rwandan Civilians

French troops in Rwanda on a humanitarian mission flew seriously wounded Tutsi tribesmen by helicopter to safety tonight and undertook to protect hundreds more from threat of attack by Hutu militiamen.

The decision to protect Tutsi refugees - carried out by troops who dug trenches and mounted machine guns around their encampment - marked the first time since France's Operation Turquoise began eight days ago that French troops have taken steps to defend groups of civilians threatened by the civil war and tribal slaughter that since the April 6 death of Rwanda's Hutu president have cost hundreds of thousands of lives.
