Article: Maryland Board of Public Works approves $7.2M Kent Island land deal

A divided Board of Public Works approved a $7.2 million deal Wednesday to preserve a piece of land at the northern tip of Kent Island in Queen Anne's County.

The board, which oversees state spending, voted 2 to 1 in favor of the purchase even as officials agreed on the need to refocus the priorities of the state open space program under which the 74-acre parcel was acquired.

Comptroller Peter Franchot cast the dissenting vote, with Gov. Martin O'Malley and Treasurer Nancy Kopp voting in favor of the purchase.
