Carl Tiedeman, 83, a retired Navy rear admiral who was a highly
decorated submarine commander in World War II, died of lung cancer
June 30 at his home in Arlington. He had lived in the Washington
area for four years.
Adm. Tiedeman retired in 1962 as head of the Navy ROTC program
at the University of North Carolina after 31 years in the Navy.
He was a native of Sioux City, Iowa, and a graduate of the U.S.
Naval Academy. He commanded submarines in the Pacific during World
War II and was credited with sinking 15 Japanese ships. He was an
engineering manager after the war and served in the Mediterranean.
