To the dismay of some Elkridge residents, the Howard County
Board of Appeals unanimously agreed to allow the old Elkridge
drive-in to reopen as a flea market next year.
Charu Mehta, a Columbia geriatrician, sought a special zoning
exception from the board to open a weekend flea market on five acres
of the 17-acre site near Route 1 and Bonnie View Lane. Mehta said
proceeds from the market would go toward property taxes and
senior-assisted housing that she and her husband plan to build on
the property in about five years.
But about 25 Elkridge residents who attended the Board of
Appeals work session last week said they believe a flea market will
draw a seedy crowd and convey the message ...
