Treasury counsel Jean Hanson has told a Senate committee
preparing for Whitewater hearings that Deputy Secretary Roger C.
Altman instructed her to brief White House officials last fall on
the Whitewater investigation, according to congressional sources.
Altman had told Congress that he did not know about the prior
meetings between Hanson and top White House aides.
In documents turned over to Congress, Hanson also contends that
Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen was informed on several occasions
of developments in the investigation, contrary to his public
suggestion that he has been removed from the Madison Guaranty
Savings & Loan matter.
