Anywhere else, they would merely be serving one of the nation's
big TV markets. But in Washington, the network affiliates serve as
gatekeepers for advertisers who want to influence Congress and stir
up media attention.
So when WRC, WTTG, WJLA and WUSA all rejected a health care
commercial assailing Pizza Hut, one of their major advertisers, it
was a setback for the Health Care Reform Project, which supports a
Clinton-style health plan. The ad said that while the company pays
for health insurance for its workers in Germany and Japan, "for many
workers in America, Pizza Hut pays no health insurance. Zero."
