"NYPD Blue," which in its freshman year has cost ABC some
nervous advertiser dollars and a few anxious, primarily Southern
affiliates, paid off big yesterday, receiving a record 26 Emmy
nominations, including seven for its cast.
The critically acclaimed, if criticized, series was nominated
as best drama as it dominated the 46th annual prime-time television
awards, announced by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in
Los Angeles. The 26 nominations were the most ever for a regular
series, exceeding the 21 for "Hill Street Blues" in 1980-81. Both
shows are from producer Steven Bochco. The 1977 miniseries "Roots,"
with 37, received the most nominations ever.
