A federal judge yesterday ruled that the Citadel military
college must admit Shannon Faulkner to its uniformed corps of
cadets, making Faulkner the first woman granted full admission in
152 years.
The decision means Faulkner will be allowed to live on the
Citadel's famous Charleston, S.C., campus when school begins next
month, the only woman among 1,950 male cadets. An Aug. 1 hearing is
to decide the practical issues of whether Faulkner will live in the
barracks, if she will have to shave her head and if her blue-gray
uniform will include a skirt.
But U.S. District Judge C. Weston Houck has not decided how the
Faulkner case affects other women who apply to the Citadel and has
left open ...
