With a beaming President Clinton as their witness, Jordan's King Hussein and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands yesterday over an agreement to end the 46-year state of war between their countries and work together for peace in the Middle East.

As a fierce sun beat down on the South Lawn of the White House, the two leaders stood with Clinton before hundreds of spectators and signed what they called "The Washington Declaration." It is not a formal peace treaty, but it nonetheless signals the removal of one more country from the roll of hostile Arab neighbors that have opposed Israel since the Jewish state's founding in 1948.
