Mary Jo K. Fite, 54, a retired tax law specialist and pension
official with the Internal Revenue Service, died of cancer July 28
at her home in Alexandria.
Mrs. Fite was born in Miami. She graduated from Stetson
University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. In 1964, she
joined the staff of the IRS in Atlanta, and in 1966, she was
transferred to Washington.
She became a tax law specialist and later manager of a group
that helps administer the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of
1974, known as ERISA.
In the early 1980s, Mrs. Fite transferred to the Labor
Department as assistant director of the division of exemptions,
which also has responsibilities in administering ERISA.
