There's an eagle named Hope circling the skies above the
Chesapeake Bay these days. Federal officials released the huge bird
to celebrate some good news in the world of endangered species. Just
before the long Fourth of July weekend began, the Clinton
administration and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the
removal of the American bald eagle from the list of species that are
about to disappear. Our national symbol had been on the endangered
list since 1967.
The bald eagle is being reclassified and placed on the
"threatened" list instead. Wildlife workers call this process
"downlisting." Endangered species are considered in immediate danger
of dying out; threatened species ...
