Asia barely has enough time to use the lessons learned
elsewhere during the first dozen years of the AIDS epidemic if it
wants to prevent massive spread of the disease here.
That was the sobering message offered at today's opening session
of the 10th International Conference on AIDS, the premier gathering
of AIDS researchers, held this year for the first time in Asia. In a
speech opening the meeting, Michael H. Merson, director of the World
Health Organization's Global Program on AIDS, said it is possible to
stop the spread of the disease in Asia and avoid the kind of
catastrophe that has befallen Africa, but only if there is immediate
action.
