Article: Gas Weapons Ban Backed By Pentagon; Skeptical Senators Voice Reservations

The nation's top military officer sought to reassure skeptical senators yesterday that destroying the U.S. chemical arsenal will not leave the military vulnerable to chemical weapons strikes from Iraq, North Korea and other rogue states.

Gen. John Shalikashvili, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee U.S. conventional forces are so overwhelming that even nations that keep chemical weapons would be unlikely to use them in a war for fear of American retaliation. He urged lawmakers to ratify the Chemical Weapons Convention, which would require the United States and other signatories to abolish virtually all chemical weapons by 2004.
