"TEENAGE SYMPHONIES to God" is what Brian Wilson once called
his intricate pop-song chorales, but - high harmonies aside - the
Velvet Crush album that takes that phrase as its title doesn't sound
very much like the Beach Boys. This Rhode Island trio's music is
rooted in the ambitious pop-rock of the bands such as Yardbirds and
the Byrds (whose Gene Clark wrote "Why Not Your Baby," one of the
disc's two covers), but most closely resembles the eclectic
'60s-rock revivalism of '80s groups like Game Theory.
