BIG WATER drops fell by the millions in fierce, pounding
splashes. At times, they fell in sheets, obscuring vision and
turning the mountain road into a rapidly moving stream.
"Well," she said. "You wanted rain. Here's your rain." There
was a sharp edge to her voice, and it cut.
I'd been asking for rain on the Virginia-to-Georgia run, asking
for rain such as this. What better way to test the road handling of
