Sharp population increases coupled with declining grain
production are likely to cause dire food deficits in the developing
world during the next 40 years, according to a new book co-written
by environmentalist Lester Brown.
The book, titled "Full House," projects a worldwide population
boom in the next century. Between the years 1990 and 2030, Brown and
coauthor Hal Kane write, Earth's population will skyrocket by 90
million annually. That compares with an average annual rise of 70
million over the past four decades. Worldwide population will rise
to 8.9 billion by 2030 from 5.3 billion in 1990, the book predicts.
