So says the middle daughter of the long-widowed Mr. Chu, Taipei's master chef and national treasure, who has held his edgy little family together for almost 20 years with his cooking. But his elaborate Sunday dinners have become torture for the three girls, each straining for adult freedom but fearful of abandoning their increasingly gruff dad.

For moviegoers, though, the hours of preparation for those dinners - the dazzling knife work, the steaming and sculpting - make "Eat Drink Man Woman" a foodie film par excellence. Think Like Water for Chinese.
