It's an old story in art history: Long-dead painters are
rediscovered, their genius is proclaimed and temples are built to
their glory. This summer marks the full-blown resurrection of Jasper
Cropsey, a Hudson River School painter whose sentimental works
slipped into obscurity for most of this century. As recently as 16
years ago, one of his best paintings was discovered in a barn.
But his rehabilitation will be complete by summer's end with
the public opening of a $4 million, lavishly designed gallery and
study center next to the artist's original house and studio at
Hastings-on-Hudson, 20 miles north of New York City.
Cropsey's ghost would feel at home in the Newington-Cropsey ...
