THE RETAIL GREENING of Bethesda has been news for some time,
but these days it's looking as if the bloom may be about overblown.
An alarming number of nightspots, and particularly those offering
live music, have taken the big fall, and the restaurant turnover
rate is getting swifter. Once the summer season for live music on
the Metro plaza ends, it's gonna be awful quiet around here.
Consider: The once R&B-inclined Malarkey's is now the Old
Liberty Grill, which is fine for barbecue fans, but not for music
lovers. Geoz, the inexhaustibly optimistic nook in East Bethesda
(the right hook of Montgomery Avenue) that held on to reggae for a
long time, has finally lost hope and gone dark. ...
