That the Armenians survive is something of a miracle.
Just think of their enemies - Alexander's armies, the mighty
Roman legions, the Persians, the Parthians, the Sassanids, the
caliphs of Baghdad, Timur's Mongolhordes, the Turks, the Germans
and the Russians. And they're fighting still, with Azerbaijan. As a
people, as a culture, they've been beaten up so often they ought to
be extinct.
Their culture has sustained them. Ancient pillars of that
culture are displayed in "Treasures in Heaven: Armenian Illuminated
Manuscripts," opening today at the Walters Art Gallery. There are 88
old volumes in this impressive exhibition, organized most studiously
by New York's Pierpont Morgan ...
