Kidney failure is one of the most damaging complications of diabetes. But now a study byUniversity of Minnesota researchers suggests that tightly controlling blood sugar levels helps prevent the start of kidney failure in those at greatest risk for this serious complication.

The five-year study included 99 people who had such severe diabetes-related kidney disease that they required a kidney transplant. At the time of their surgery, participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups.
