Delegates to the U.N. conference on population and development
neared agreement today on a U.S.-backed compromise aimed at defusing
religious controversy over abortion, but the effort stalled at the
last minute when the Vatican raised objections.
U.S. and other delegates had hoped - and predicted - that
agreement would be reached tonight on the second day of the
conference, removing what many participants said is the biggest
hurdle to reaching consensus on a formal plan to stabilize world
population. The abrupt break in discussions startled many delegates,
who were uncertain about its implications for the rest of the
nine-day meeting.
