Quebec voters today narrowly elected a separatist government
pledged to leading the French-speaking province out of Canada and
into nationhood.
Preliminary official results showed the separatist Parti
Quebecois winning by less than a percentage point of the popular
vote over the incumbent party, the pro-unity Quebec Liberals.
The returns indicated that separatist candidates won in 77 of
Quebec's 125 electoral districts, with the Liberals taking 47 and a
separatist splinter party prevailing in the remaining one. Polls in
the closing days of the campaign had indicated a heftier majority
for the Parti Quebecois in both the popular vote and legislative
seats.
