Article: Clinton Stops Justice Department From Seeking Forfeiture of Tithes; Church Contributions Protected Against Creditors, President Says

President Clinton has ordered the Justice Department to abandon efforts to force a Minnesota church to turn over to creditors the weekly tithes of a couple who had gone into bankruptcy.

Partly in response to criticism by religious leaders, Clinton, in a rare intervention, on Wednesday overruled the Justice Department. He told Attorney General Janet Reno that Justice had adopted too "narrow" a view of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which he had signed just last year with much fanfare.

The case involves Bruce and Nancy Young, Minnesota parishioners who donated 10 percent of their gross income to their church each week in a year when their electrical contracting business was heading ...
