Mark H. Curtis, 74, a former history professor and college
president who served as president of the Association of American
Colleges and Universities in Washington from 1978 until retiring in
1985, died of a heart ailment Sept. 12 at Sibley Memorial Hospital.
He was stricken at his home in Bethesda.
Dr. Curtis was born in Minnesota and raised in Iowa. He was a
European history graduate of Yale University, where he also received
master's and doctoral degrees in English history. He served in the
Navy in the Pacific during World War II, attaining the rank of
lieutenant commander.
He taught English history at Williams College from 1950 to
