This is the 50th anniversary year of the creation of the World
Bank and International Monetary Fund at Bretton Woods, N.H., just as
the Allies were closing in on victory in World War II. A discussion
and flood of reports on what we have learned - and where we go from
here - will reach a crescendo at a symposium in Madrid starting
midweek in conjunction with the annual meeting of the IMF and the
World Bank.
This torrent of remembrance and prescription may need a little
debunking. One key thing to remember is that while the Bretton Woods
conference is credited with triggering a quarter century of global
prosperity that lasted through the 1960s, it offers few, if any,
