SAN JOSE, Calif. -- After a resounding 44-35 victory over Fresno
State Monday in the Silicon Valley Classic, the future appears very
bright for Manheim's Jeff Smoker and Michigan State.
Early in the season, Spartans coach Bobby Williams often made
references to Damon Dowdell during his weekly news conferences.
Although Dowdell, a redshirt freshman, was the third-string
quarterback, behind Smoker, a sophomore, and senior Ryan Van Dyke, it
almost seemed as if he was viewed as the Spartans' quarterback of the
future because of his athleticism.
Not any more.
It's Smoker's job -- for now, and for tomorrow. The 6-3, 207-
