Article: District basketball playoffs likely to expand; Teams with .500 or better records would be eligible if proposal is ratified

The Ephrata boys' basketball team missed out on the District 3 basketball playoffs last season despite a winning record.

Under a proposal that is likely to be approved and go into effect next season, an identical 12-11 record would allow the Mountaineers to compete in the playoffs.

The number of teams that shared Ephrata's fate last season was enough to prompt District 3 to come up with a plan, said district chairman Jim Ellingsworth.

The new proposal would allow teams with winning records to compete in the playoffs, even if their power ratings don't qualify them for the 16-team field.
