For a two-ton piece of architecture, the cupola that once embellished the west wing of the Lancaster County Almshouse gets around.

The octagonal structure started life as white pine wood in the forests of northern Pennsylvania.

After a float trip down the Susquehanna River, the wood was milled in Marietta. It became part of the almshouse, better known as the County Home, in 1874-75.

Demolition contractors sold the cupola for about $350 in 1969 when the county home was razed to make way for Conestoga View, 900 E. King St.
