PEOPLE ARE GOING GA-GA for home-grown green onions.
"When we have home-grown onions, they are usually in huge demand,"
says Ethel Stoner, co-owner of Home Grown Vegetables, a produce stand
at Central Market.
Green onions peak between April and June, Stoner says, but they
are available year-round.
"Some people plant green onions early in the spring, then harvest
them after six weeks," she says. "Some green onions are planted in
the fall and stay in the ground until spring."
Green onions are also known as "bunching onions" because of how
they are sold, usually wrapped in thick, blue rubber bands.
"They are sold in bunches," Stoner says. "People don't buy just
one."
