Michigan State held its first preseason scrimmage last Saturday,
and the Spartans' Lancaster-Lebanon League connection -- junior
quarterback Jeff Smoker and freshman tailback Jaren Hayes -- got off
to a fast start.
According to an internet account of the game, Smoker completed 12
of 22 passes for 98 yards in the 96-play controlled scrimmage.
The 6-3, 215-pound former Manheim Central star, who is set to
begin his third season under center for the Spartans, tossed a 6-
yard touchdown pass to wideout Matt Trannon. His 17-yard completion
to tailback David Richard set up Trannon's score. He also scored a TD
on a 3-yard keeper later in the scrimmage.
