Federal and local investigators are searching for a former World Bank official who disappeared this week during his trial in Loudoun County on charges of using forged checks to buy thoroughbred horses for his 10-year-old daughter.

Kazem Iravani, 48, allegedly used a complex scheme involving several aliases, phony businesses, unwitting intermediaries and counterfeit checks to buy two horses and horse-related supplies valued at more than $20,000, according to prosecutors.

Iravani also is a suspect in a federal investigation into a series of computer equipment thefts worth about $200,000 in the Washington area, Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney James D. Forsyth said.

After attending the first day of his trial in Loudoun County Circuit Court, Iravani failed to return to court Wednesday. …
