Marjo Talbott, the new head of Maret School, did not expect her
defining moment to come as early as it did, over the issue that it
did or at the hands of a seventh-grader.
But when a girl approached her after an assembly on the first
day of the school year and told her it was sexist to retain a rule
allowing middle-school girls but not boys to wear earrings, Talbott
instantly concluded that this matter was not to be ignored,
postponed or scorned.
After consulting faculty members and parents, Talbott gave the
boys the go-ahead to adorn their ears. As word of the new freedom
circulated throughout the middle school, Talbott passed muster with
