ENVY MAY BE the deadliest of the seven sins. Members of the
Friends of the Folger Library are showing off their private literary
collections, and some of the stuff they've got will just kill you.
These personal hoards include books and manuscripts that
belonged to the great and/or famous, letters they wrote to each
other, pictures they enjoyed, first editions from way, way back, and
other goodies that will make you want to just sit down and cry.
The only consolation is the hope that these treasures
eventually will wind up in the Folger's collection, safe from
further risks on the public market. Meanwhile, we can only lust in
our hearts and be churlishly grateful for being allowed to ...
