FRANCISCO FRANCO died in 1975, having been dictator of all of
Spain since 1939. Unlike his admired patrons Hitler and Mussolini,
he had survived and dedicated himself to the preservation of his
creation, a right-wing dictatorship. Yet after his death his
creation rapidly unraveled, and his chosen successor, the new king,
Juan Carlos, brought a democratic Spain into post-war modern Europe.
