Article: Dairymen unite, fight falling milk prices // Dairy farmers nationwide, including many Lancaster County producers, are joining forces in a unique cooperation venture to cut milk production and increase exports, as a way to stabilize plunging prices.

Still suffering from a prolonged spell of very low milk prices, dairy farmers are taking a historic step toward controlling the nation's milk supply.

The major milk cooperatives in the country -- which include most Lancaster County producers among their members -- want to slice a whopping 4.6 billion pounds of milk annually from the market.

That is expected to boost the price of milk received by farmers by $1.30 per hundredweight. Since last year, farmers have been getting less than $11 for every hundred pounds of milk they ship -- not enough for most to break even.
