Hazel Jackson remembers a time when proper dress required a hat
and gloves.
"Now we only wear gloves when it's cold," she said.
And fancy hats for special occasions, like Easter, have almost
gone the way of the dinosaur.
That is, except for black women, many of whom wear stylish hats to
church not only on Easter but every Sunday.
Jackson is no exception. She wears a hat to church on most Sundays
and at other times, too.
For her, wearing an Easter hat marks "the beginning of
spring...the beauty in spring."
"It adds to the newness," she said.
On Mother's Day 2000, Jackson's daughter Rosalyn gave Jackson a
copy of the book, "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats,"
