The most significant battles in small-college sports over the next
few years might be contested off the field.
Last week, the Centennial Conference adopted a series of athletics
reforms that promises to be a prelude to a debate among NCAA Division
III schools throughout the nation.
By the time the issues are settled, the 426 schools in Division
III could adopt reforms that the Centennial and other conferences
believe reaffirm the role of academics over athletics.
If they don't, some schools in the coming years could push for a
split in Division III, with reform-minded schools forming a separate
sub-division.
