The man accused of setting fire to his ex-girlfriend's home Friday, killing her four children, is portrayed in court documents as a violent man who was obsessed and desperate to rekindle a broken relationship.

"I love you," David allegedly told Cheryl Birster the Saturday before the fire. "If I can't have you, I will kill you."

In the weeks leading up to the fire, David visited Birster at Weis Markets in Bridgeport, where she worked in the deli, and at her 507 E. Chestnut St. home.

Each time, David professed his love.

And each time, Birster turned him away.
