A young Palestinian today wrapped himself in explosives,
pedaled a bicycle to this Israeli checkpoint and detonated his
charge, killing himself and three army reserve officers and wounding
at least nine other people.
The suicide attack came nine days after Hani Abed, an activist
linked to the radical Islamic Jihad, died in a car-bomb explosion at
Khan Yunis southwest of here. Through hints and non-denials, the
Israeli government has encouraged the widespread assumption that it
killed Abed.
Islamic Jihad called today's attack a first measure of
vengeance for Abed's death. At the hour of the attack, perhaps two
miles away, thousands of angry demonstrators marched from the
