It seemed like just yesterday when a wide-eyed, lanky freshman
named Jeff Smoker took the field for Manheim Central's varsity
football team for the first time.
Tonight in San Antonio, Tex., the former Barons' star will take
the field as Michigan State's starting quarterback for the final
time, when the Spartans take on nationally ranked Nebraska in the
Alamo Bowl at 9 on ESPN-TV.
Michigan State is 8-4 overall and is not ranked in either poll.
Nebraska is 9-3 overall and has the 14th-ranked defense in the
country. The Cornhuskers, ranked 21st in the ESPN/USA Today coaches
poll and 22nd by the Associated Press, lead the nation in turnover
