Article: Some restaurants pull green onions off menu; But hepatitis scare hasn't hurt grocers' sales

Restaurant servers hear it all the time when taking orders -- "hold the pickle" or "hold the mayo."

Now some restaurants are insisting that customers "hold the green onions."

Since a deadly outbreak of hepatitis A in western Pennsylvania this month was linked to green onions, some local restaurants have stopped cooking with them.

Carlos & Charlie's and TGI Friday's recently announced that none of their restaurants are including green onions in dishes.

A Carlos & Charlie's manager, Russ, who did not want his last name to be used, said the restaurant has replaced green onions with red onions in its recipes.

"It's a small thing to fix and doesn't make a big difference (in taste)," Russ said. ...
