The investigation into an incident of mad cow disease centers on a
lone Washington state slaughterhouse, three farms there and a single
Alberta, Canada herd.
Yet, the case out West has prompted Pennsylvania Department of
Agriculture officials to join their counterparts in other states and
assure citizens that the nation's beef supply is safe.
These officials point to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's
aggressive "targeted surveillance program" that uncovered the
nation's lone mad cow case in the first place.
In 1989, the officials note, the U.S. banned all cattle coming
from countries that have reported mad cow cases. In 1997, the U.S.
banned feeds produced with the meat and nerve tissue ...
