Instead of just frittering and fussing over the lousy, low rates that banks are paying you on savings, you might compare what Uncle Sam will pay you on savings bonds.

Im talking about those patriotic investments that have been around forever, and which some folks used to laugh at when banks were offering feisty 5 and 6 percent yields on their CDs and money market accounts.

Fact is, savings bonds today offer higher rates than the average short-term CD and MMA.
